We love turkey, and I make a damn fine turkey, I must say. But I do miss the wonderful turkey farm we had in Bucks County. We're having turkey for Christmas Day, too, which we never do - too close to Thanksgiving. But since we didn't have turkey on Thanksgiving, we decided to make one. I'll send you some hints and tips in email - I did it a very lazy way last time I made one and it was excellent good. Turns out the lazy way is superior to all that basting and fussing.

Christmas Eve will be lobster bisque, shrimp, rack of lamb, my addictive potato gratin and asparagus. My mom gave me a couple of novelty cake pans for Christmas so dessert will be either a 3-D snoman or Christmas tree cake.

I really could use a few more days preparation. Can we hit the pause button and put the whole thing on hold for just a couple days?

Lisa, I love your idea for the corn casserole. "We're havin' corn and you're gonna like it, see?"

As for the Titanic, that damn boat sinks every time.

I found this funny Mad TV video poking fun at the Ipod commercial:

Darr, your Christmas dinner sounds delish.

We do the un-Christmas since all children are doing it for their children. I am off the hook. Ordinarily on Thanksgibbon and Christmas we eat out at an Indian restaurant. This year we are invited to a feast at Ilona's house. It will probably be her last one. She has stage 4 breast cancer and is not responding to treatments. She motors on as usual. We are taking coleslaw for 35 people and if everyone else is bringing forth the side dishes we should be waddling by late afternoon. She is cooking a roast of beef and a turkey. Merry Christmas to all. xxoo

We got through it. Tomorrow I take Aidan to the Alamo. I have never driven to San Antonio and have printed out a map of how to get from the Alamo to the zoo. We plan to make a day of it, and be home by 7:00 PM, as Chandra and I have a rehearsal.

Oh, and yes, I am following the Peterson saga. He seems like a typical rub-your-face-in-it bully, with a badge. However, I think he'll walk unless they find a body or some sort of smoking gun. He's a cop. Way too knowledgeable to mess up in any of the usual ways.

What I'm Reading

  • Edward Ugel: Money For Nothing
Subtitled, One Man's Journey Through The Dark Side Of Lottery Millions. (****)
  • Susan Braudy: This Crazy Thing Called Love
The true story behind the Billy Woodward shooting, the case on which Dominick Dunne based his novel, The Two Mrs. Grenvilles. (*****)
  • Matt Birbeck: A Beautiful Child
True story about the mysterious life and death of a young woman who's real identity still remains unclear. Excellent read. (****)
  • Richard Yates: Revolutionary Road
A novel about the alienation arising from living in the "perfect" suburbs. Hailed as a great literary book. I thought it was okay, at best. (**)
  • Annie Proulx: Close Range, Wyoming Stories
A collection of lyrical short stories from Annie Proulx that contains Brokeback Mountain among other gems. (****)
  • John Grisham: The Innocent Man
I can only quote from the jacket blurb: "If you believe that in America you are innocent until proven guilty, this book will shock you. If you believe in the death penalty, this book will disturb you. If you believe the criminal justice system is fair, this book will infuriate you." A must read. (*****)
  • Nancy Caldwell Sorel: The Women Who Wrote The War
Fascinating look at women journalists at the front during WWII. (****)
  • Jack Olsen: Charmer
Riveting true crime by a master. (****)
  • Ann Rule: Too Late To Say Good Bye
Excellent telling of the Bart Corbin cases. (****)
  • Michael Crichton: Airframe
Ehhh. Better than the back of a cereal box, I guess. (**)
