The Restless Sleep; Inside New York City's Cold Case Squad, by Stacy Horn. Viking, pub.
Stacy Horn is a National Public Radio contributor to Fresh Air. I've enjoyed her broadcasts very much and eagerly looked forward to reading this book. It didn't disappoint. NYC has at least 8894 unsolved murders and this work gives an inside look at what really goes into solving a seemingly unsolvable "cold case".
The dogged work of the detectives on the squad and their compassion and diligence to decades of victims is remarkable.
I won't give away any secrets of the book, but I would highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in forensics and crime. Although the subject matter is grim, Ms. Horn manages to humanize both the victims and the cops who pursue these cases in a rare inside look at NYC's cold case squad.
Two thumbs up.
I've never read a book in this genre (though I love murder mysteries), but you do make it sound quite interesting...

Better watch out, Rob, I'll make a true crime fan out of you yet!
I've always found non-fiction so much more compelling than fiction since it never amazes me what horrific things people can do to one another.

I'll have to agree with you on that one, Lisa. Fact is usually so much stranger (and scarier) than fiction.
The book sounds like a good read. I've become addicted to "Cold Case", so I'm sure I'd really get into "The Restless Sleep".
