I loved the Cars. I still do, but just not as much. I've seen them in concert three times and well, they are pretty boring in concert. The first time I saw them was in high school, when I was was filled with that rush of new wave adrenaline and I loved to wear big black boxy jackets with lots of buttons on the lapels and high top black Converse Chuck Taylor's with my Dr. Seuss striped leggings and Oh. My. God. I was just so filled with cool.
The Cars embodied that. Their music was so cool. And I waited impatiently for months after buying the tickets to go see them in concert. And they were totally boring. They just stood on the stage and sang and played their instruments and there was more excitement generated during a Howell High School Jazz Band Concert circa 1983.
I saw them twice again within the next few years, hoping they were having a bad Quaalude night before or something and nope, they were even more boring in concert than the first time, if that is even possible.
Musical Disappointment Number One.
I did have lots of great musical experiences, growing up in SE Michigan. I've seen Bob Seger umpty umpt times and although it is totally uncool to like him, well, I LOVE BOB! ( Do NOT tell anyone.) I can rock out to all his songs and know all the words and I love Sunspot Baby best of all.
"She left me here stranded/Like a dog without a bone/She left me here stranded/All alone/I checked in Miami/I checked in Negril/And all I found was a month old bill/I checked the Bahamas/And they said she was gone/Sunspot baby how could she have done me so wrong?"
Anyway.
Going back to summer Summer SUMMER. That is one of my all time favorite Cars songs. I will still turn it up on the radio.
I'm also reminded of Summer from the Napolean Dymamite movie, where Hayley Duff is giving her election speech and says in this totally snotty voice "VOTE FOR SUMMER!" and makes the Hawaiian hand gesture. What a bimbo. Both those Duff sisters are. They won't be in line for any Academy Awards anytime soon, that's for sure. Stick to Nickelodeon, girlfriends.
Anyways. Again.
And now, we are hitting the peak of summer. I wish, living in Michigan, that summer was 9 months long and winter was 3 months long. Sadly, it is the other way around. I am a summer girl. If you don't believe me, just check out all the freckles on my face from being in the sun so much lately.
YES DAMN YOU SKIN ADVISERS, I KNOW IT'S BAD BUT I MOISTURIZE LIKE I'M LIZ TAYLOR SO BACK THE FUCK OFF, ALL RIGHT!? I HAVE MY AUNT BABBY AS A REMINDER, OKAY, I KNOW I DON'T WANT TO HAVE THE SAME TEXTURE FACE AS MY PURSE'S LEATHER AT 50, OKAY? I ALSO DON'T START HITTING THE GIN AND TONICS AT 11:30 A.M., I AT LEAST WAIT UNTIL 4. KNOCK IT OFF, WE'VE COME A LONG WAY SINCE THEN, BABY.
Sorry, I didn't mean to shout. My Aunt Babby looked bad, though. She is my inspiration to moisturize every night. And every morning. And in between. Also my inspiration to not wear gold jewelry that outweighs you soaking wet because you might drown like my Aunt Babby did if you fall off your high heel Frederick's of Hollywood sandals into the drink and if everyone else on the boat has been hitting the G&Ts that long, well, they might think you went to the bathroom and were in there a very long time and make jokes about how Babby fell in until you didn't show up six hours later. At which point, well, let's just say sharks.
My Ya-Ya sisters are not as hip to heat as I am, so we are trying to find the perfect Ya-Ya place to live. I guess the Caribbean is out, eh Darr? Okay, how about a moderate heat? Say off the coast of a Carolina? Or Virginia Beach?
summer. Summer. SUMMER!
I've always said.....
You can't be from Michigan and not have a small place in your heart for Bob Seeger.

I grew up on Bob Segar... Of all the musicians from MI he was the best I would have to say... ( Can you tell I am not much of a Nugent fan ..??? ) In fact his "greatest hit's" is in my car as I write this... Ryan even likes him - although he thinks the best thing to come from Detroit is Eminem...!( poor misguided youth )

When I was in Home Ec in high school, we had to design and budget for our perfect wedding. I did the assignment but got a 'C' since the teacher said my budget was unrealistic. I reminded her that she hadn't given us a budget to work with so there was no reason I couldn't hire the Cars to play my reception.

I saw the Cars once - yes, I was saddened also. I do believe; however, that Ric Okasik (sp)is the human fly.
I have to confess, I did get all excited when you said your new best friend was "Justin." Then I read on....hmmm. No, you weren't talking about me.

Thanks, Lisa---now I have that song permanently stuck in my head and dreamt of Ric Ocasek last night (shudder).

Oh but what about "Turn The Page"? My absolute favorite of all Seger's tunes. Saw him in Buffalo in the late 70's or early 80's and thought the balcony would fall down...wonderful!
