The Last Party: Studio 54, Disco, And The Culture Of The Night; by Anthony Haden-Guest, William Morrow And Company, pub.
If you've ever wondered about the evolution of night life in New York, this is the story. Although it centers around Studio 54, it also describes the dissolution of Studio and the emergence of Klub Kids and that whole culture of, as Haden-Guest describes it, Nightworld.
This book covers all the dish. The drugs, the sex, the beginning of becoming a celebrity for the sake of celebrity (Hear that, Paris?). Oh, and disco.
Of course, by the time I lived close to NYC, Studio was long gone. I did go to Area and Palladium and a couple of the other bars featured in the book.
But I would have loved to spend one night at Studio back when it was The Joint. Just one.
As a side note, I must admit that whoever edited this book must have been Helen Keller. There are countless typographical errors, grammar faux pas and the pages are even numbered incorrectly in more than one spot. If you can get past that, it's a very interesting read.
The editing sort of reminds me of when I used to try to write papers in college after smoking a fattie alhtough I must say, I was still able to follow context here, these were strictly mechanical errors in the book editing. Not always so in my college days.
