I hate the cold. I am a wimp. I admit it.
Oh sure, I used think it was fun to go skiing, snowmobiling, even sledding. My passion for these things has faded since they are accomplished outside during winter.
My quest for several years was to find the perfect winter coat. It had to be at least somewhat fashionable, it had to be of high quality as I don't replace my winter coats more than twice a decade and also, because of that, it had to be somewhat classic in design. The most important factor, however, was that it had to be warm.
I scoured the catalogs (since I am terribly mallaphobic). LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, Land's End. I liked Land's End the best because they rated their coats in terms of how cold it could get while their fabulous coat kept you warm.
I ended up with a black ankle length down-filled coat with a hood from Land's End. It does nothing for me fashion wise. Paired with my Sorrel boots, I appear to be heading off on an Antarctic expedition of long duration.
I love this coat so much, I bought my mother-in-law one in powder blue for Christmas that year.
I realized that this is the perfect coat for me in the dead of winter when I started working up a sweat when I was wearing it grocery shopping.
