The Melon Fest just sounds hokey, doesn't it?
I am so lucky, I live in a town that has not one, but three major fests each year.
And before you start thinking of all those Melon Queen jokes and where you could go with it, they don't have a Melon Queen or King. They have a Melon Prince and Princess, thank you very much, for the toddler set.
"Yeah I was the Melon Prince when I was a baby, I was so cute." Is that really a line you could work comfortably into conversation?
I've finally figured out that the point of these Fests is not, Oh, please come to ye olde Howell to see our pretty melons, nor is it, Oh come to ye olde Howell to see our pretty hot air balloons sit on the ground. It's not even Come to Howell to freeze your ass off during Festival of Lights.
No, it's more like, come spend your money. Buy, Buy, tourist, it shall set you free while you admire our quaint Victorian downtown.
If you happen to come to watch the Melon Parade, please be sure you will need to buy cotton candy, a bottle of water, a frozen lemonade and at least one other kitschy thing you really have no use for, but seemed like a good idea at the time.
I do think a Melon Fest t shirt would be kind of cool in a way. I'm just not sure what way.
The Howell Melon fest coincides this year with the week-end of my 20th high school reunion.
I am in close covert contact with two friends from high school. We are laying plans. It's wonderful I have rediscovered them and we are just having a blast. Can't wait to see them for the reunion.
I digress.
The Melon Fest has a beer tent. It was retired for a while, I understand there were a couple good brawls, but it's been reinstated in the near past.
There are plans to attend the beer tent on the Friday before the reunion.
The organizers of the reunion seemed to think that people who live outside of Howell are apt to come back during Melon Fest. Okay, I lived away from here and coming back for the Melon Fest to visit never was high on my list. I lived here, I knew to avoid town like the plague. I still know to avoid it during Melon Fest.
This is going to be good. I can't wait to see how many people I know at the Melon Fest Beer Tent.
I might even buy a melon somewhere along the way.
