Liz Phair is one of those artists who doesn't get much radio play, yet has a huge underground base of fans. She really does some great stuff. Although I have all her CDs, White Chocolate Space Egg remains my favorite. I listen to it often.
Some great lyrics:
From "Polyester Bride":
And then he said, "Do you want to be a Poyester Bride?
Or do you want to hang your head and die?
Do you want to find alligator cowboy boots they just put on sale?
Do you want to flap your wings and fly away from here?"
From "Headache":
I'm a psychomatic sister
Running around without a leash
You can take me home, but I will never be your girl
I won't let your mystery unfurl
And my favorite, from "Perfect World":
I want to be cool, tall, vunerable and luscious
I wuld have it all if I'd only had this much
No need for Lucifer to fall if he'd learn to keep his mouth shut
I would be involved with you.
Our friend Sam, who is a former 82nd Airborne Ranger, happened to be over when I was listening to Liz. He picked up the CD and commented, "Hey, she's pretty hot." I then made him listen to songs carefully. His next comment was, "She's a little angry, isn't she?"
Liz is a strong lyricist who writes much of her own music . She ain't Celine Dion. A good example of yes, women can rock.
