I've been watching Colonial House on PBS this week. While I admire these poor souls for what they are attempting to recreate, part of me thinks it's just Survivor in Pilgrim Clothes and another part of me thinks they are just plain fruit loops.
While I was somewhat fond of primative camping (notably in the days when I smoked pot a lot), I really enjoy having clean hair everyday and easy access to dental floss. I wouldn't last a week in that colony and oh boy would I be wearing the profanity badge.
Colonial House did spark a lively discussion between my husband and I regarding the roles men and women played in society in those days. Women were basically chattel and they worked their asses off from dawn til dusk. Not that the men didn't work as well, but they also seemed to get a lot of time to stand around and bullshit as men are still wont to do in the 21st century. Women had little to no say in the day to day running of the world they lived in. So, if you are female and think you are repressed, be thankful you didn't live in the 17th century. They would have been looking for a stake to burn you on.
And just imagine dragging all those clothes around in 90 degree weather with that silly little doily hat.
